I loved going out to feed the cattle when I was younger. I would hop in my grandfather's F-150 and we'd go and ride around his 115 acre property. I would help them pick blackberries, shuck corn, plant flowers, and buy feed. I loved these small tasks as a child. The farm was a huge playground for me.
I did something shocking. Yesterday, I chased cattle and put them back in the pasture with a 72 year old lady (my grandmother). I had went out to the farm to take care of my grandfather. He had a lobe of his lung removed a week ago. The doctors removed all the cancer with ease. My grandfather said he couldn't ask for much better since he'd been smoking 63 years. I realized in the time I spent out there the importance of embracing a day. I spent a day sitting and cooking, and I felt like I accomplished more in that day than I had in years. I gave them joy with time.
There are times we get so caught up in all the "stuff" we are doing that...the sentiment and simpleness is lost. I sat on the porch and swang on the bench swing for an hour listening to my grandparents and Great Aunt Nina talk about life and the progression of it. It was reaffirming to hear that they, also, knew not where life would take them in the next year. They did know however that it was a gift to still be here....
